About Greenbelt, MD

A suburb of Washington, D.C., Greenbelt is a city in Prince George’s County, Maryland, in the United States. There were 24,921 people there as of the 2020 Census. Of the three experimental and contentious New Deal Greenbelt Towns—the others being Greenhills, Ohio, and Greendale, Wisconsin—Greenbelt is the first and biggest. The federal government conceptualized and constructed Greenbelt. Rexford Guy Tugwell, the undersecretary of agriculture, came up with the idea for the cooperative community in 1935. However, throughout the brief existence of the Greenbelt Towns project, his apparent collectivist mindset sparked criticism. The Emergency Relief Appropriations Act of 1935, approved by Congress on April 8, 1935, gave the initiative official legal status. On May 1, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order creating the United States Resettlement Administration with the power provided to him by this Act. The project, which was originally known as Maryland Special Project No. 1, was given the name Greenbelt when building on it by the Division of Suburban Resettlement of the Resettlement Administration started on January 13, 1936, roughly eight miles north of Washington.
