Jessup (/dsp/ JESS-p) is an unincorporated hamlet and census-designated town in Howard and Anne Arundel counties, about 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Baltimore, Maryland, United States. According to the 2020 census, the population was 10,535.
Jessup located close to the historic Spurrier’s Tavern, a farm and tavern on the post route between Baltimore and Washington (Route One) where George Washington visited frequently.
The town was named Pierceland on early maps, but the post-civil war name was Jessup’s Cut, or Jessop’s Cut, a post village in Howard County on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The name is typically credited to Jonathan Jessup, a civil engineer who worked on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and oversaw a hand-dug “cut” through Merrill’s Ridge as a project. The employees removed approximately 200,000 tons of clay off the clay hill that was blocking the trains in the frigid temperatures. Some of the convicts from the Maryland Penitentiary who also worked on the Maryland House of Corrections when it was being built transformed the clay into bricks. Some of those convicts were later transported to the House of Correction and they knew the walls were fashioned from Jessup’s Cut, therefore “the CUT”. In 1963, the name was abbreviated to Jessups. Until the mid-twentieth century, the town was known as “Jessups,” which was then reduced to “Jessup.”
